James Hayes's Tumor

James Hayes's Tumor

In 1805, Dr. Philip Syng Physick, America's most renowned surgeon, removed an enormous tumor from a man named James Hayes. The procedure took place in front of an audience at Pennsylvania Hospital's Surgical Amphitheatre. The tumor, which had been growing for 20 years, was 25-1/2 inches in circumference at its largest point. Today it is on display in a jar at the same amphitheatre where the surgery occurred.
