Church of The Advocate

Church of The Advocate

An anchor in largely African-American North Philadelphia, the George W. South Memorial Church of the Advocate was built between 1887-1897 and is a landmark in the religious, social and architectural history of the United States. It was the first Episcopal Church in the world to ordain women, and one of the best American examples of Gothic Revival style, and the only major church of its period based systematically on French sources.
